Diabetics may have sugar in their urine because

  1. the proximal tubules of their nephrons cannot reabsorb sugar efficiently
  2. they do not produce enough insulin to absorb sugar from the bloodstream
  3. of deamination of proteins in their cells
  4. poor filtration at the Bowman's capsules of their nephrons
  5. they eat large amounts of sugar

Answer(s): B

Explanation:

Diabetics may suffer from a buildup of sugar in their bloodstream because their bodies produce too little insulin (which is normally responsible for pulling sugar out of the bloodstream and into cells), and/or their body's response to insulin is reduced (a condition known as insulin resistance). Although the disease may cause damage to the kidneys eventually, the disease is not caused by any kidney malfunction.

Damage to the cells lining the large intestine would likely result in

  1. diarrhea
  2. decreased absorption of sugars and lipids
  3. decreased filtration of proteins and amino acids from the bloodstream
  4. heartburn
  5. gallstones

Answer(s): A

Explanation:

The large intestine is responsible for the absorption of salts and water from the digestive system. If damaged, excess water can remain in the digestive tract and cause watery stools, or diarrhea.

The area of this cell in which a chemiosmotic hydrogen-ion gradient is used to produce ATP is represented by the letter

  1. A
  2. C
  3. F
  4. G
  5. H

Answer(s): B

Explanation:

The mitochondrion is the organelle in which ATP is produced in eukaryotic cells. Most cells have multiple mitochondria to serve their energy needs. The letter C here points to a single mitochondrion within this cell.

The following data is collected from placing three lizards of different species in separate closed tanks to measure their production of carbon dioxide over the course of 30 minutes.

Which of the following conclusions can be accurately drawn from this data?

  1. Lizards with smaller bodies consumed less oxygen per gram of body weight than lizards with larger bodies.
  2. Each species of lizard has a unique rate of respiration.
  3. Lizards in warmer climates produce more carbon dioxide than lizards in colder climates.
  4. The 24-gram lizard consumes oxygen at a rate double that of the 12-gram lizard.
  5. The amount of carbon dioxide produced per gram of body weight for each species is the same.

Answer(s): E

Explanation:

The best conclusion here is that the amount of carbon dioxide produced per gram of body weight is the same for all species (CO., production/Weight in grams = 0.006 for all species.). Be careful with choice D, because although production of carbon dioxide for the 24 gram lizard may be twice as great as that of the 12 gram lizard, one cannot necessarily conclude that the oxygen consumption of the larger lizard is exactly double.

Hi @kg I feel you. Based on my experience, the questions are valid but some of the answers were not accurate. So I managed to study and kinda figure these answers. For me the accuracy of the questions were more important and I saw most of them in the exam.
